A frikandel is a traditional and popular snack in the Netherlands, a sort of minced meat skinless sausage with notes of mace, nutmeg, salt, pepper and is usually eaten warm.
Originally, the frikandel consists of a mixture of mechanically separated meat, including chicken and pork, but we only use pork. It is most often served with Curry Ketchup or Mayonaise, though some eat it with tomato Ketchup, mustard or even apple sauce.
Another popular choice is a frikandel served together with Mayonaise, Curry or Ketchup and chopped raw onion ,we call it a “Frikandel Speciaal”. The frikandel is cut lengthwise through the middle to provide room for the chopped onion and the sauces.
How to serve: Deep Fryer:
1. Fry the frozen frikandel about 4 minutes, frying in oil to 180 C
2. Frying pan: heat the frozen frikandel about 9 minutes at medium temperature with a 2 tbsp of butter. Flip them often.
Did you know…its so popular in the Netherlands that 600 million frikandellen are produced each year, where more than 37 frikandellen are consumed per capita per year!
Frikandel- eating contests are regularly held all over the country.
